To better understand the experience of black trans women served by HIV programs, practitioners must first understand syndemic experiences. During this session, Tori Cooper, MPH, SGE of the Human Right Campaign will discuss the intersection of addiction, violence, and HIV/AIDS in black trans women. She will explain the compounding factors each condition and experience has on a person’s risk for HIV and interaction with healthcare and social service systems. She will then discuss syndemic approaches practitioners can use to best serve the whole person in HIV Prevention and Care.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define syndemic and other key terms
- Discuss the impact violence and addiction have on black trans women
- Understand the syndemic approach to HIV prevention and care
- Use syndemic approaches in practice to help address barriers to care
