The Fundamentals of Prevention Counseling is a one-day course that provides guidelines and skill-building opportunities for professionals who implement prevention counseling and HIV antibody testing. This workshop incorporates recommendations and strategies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for personalizing prevention counseling sessions before and after testing for HIV. The Facts course is a prerequisite for this course.
UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE ABLE TO:
Identify strategies to support clients in making behavior changes that will reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV
Demonstrate through practice sessions the six steps of prevention counseling
Support the client in making a decision about testing and preparing for the result
Assist the client who tests to begin to integrate the result emotionally, behaviorally, and socially

Certificate of Completion: Certificates will be provided upon completion of this program which confirms 6.5 hours of training.
Requirements and Pre-requisites:
1) All attendees must have attended Prevention Counseling Series: Facts within the state of Virginia in the past 12 months in order to attend this Fundamentals course, as the information provided in this course builds upon Facts.
2) To be considered for this class, please upload all of your certificates of completion for The Facts live and online module sessions. Once all certificates of completion have been uploaded, you will be provided the event access code. Applicants will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. HIV Testers, Disease Intervention Specialists, HIV Case Managers, Nurses, Social Workers, and other professionals who may be working with people at risk for acquiring HIV.
